A CV joint is a mechanical component in front-wheel-drive and some all-wheel-drive vehicles that allows the drive shaft to transmit power smoothly even when the wheels are turned or the suspension moves up and down.

Key Functions:

  • Transfers torque from the transmission to the drive wheels at a constant speed.
  • Allows flexibility for steering and suspension movement.
  • Maintains consistent power delivery without speed fluctuations or vibration.

Types of CV Joints:

  1. Ball-Type (Outer CV Joint)
    • Located near the wheel.
    • Allows for greater range of motion (for turning).
  2. Tripod-Type (Inner CV Joint)
    • Located near the transmission.
    • Handles in-and-out motion as suspension travels.

Common Symptoms of a Bad CV Joint:

  • Clicking or popping noises when turning.
  • Grease on the inside of the wheel or undercarriage (from a torn boot).
  • Vibration while driving.
  • Knocking sound during acceleration.

Maintenance:

  • Regularly inspect CV boots (rubber coverings that protect the joints).
  • Replace damaged or leaking boots promptly to avoid joint failure.

Replacement:

  • If the joint itself is worn out, it often requires full CV axle replacement.
  • Cost varies depending on vehicle make and model
