A track control arm, commonly referred to as “chimta” in South Asian countries like Pakistan and India, is a crucial component of a car’s suspension system. It connects the vehicle’s chassis (frame) to the wheel hub or steering knuckle, allowing for controlled up-and-down movement of the wheels, while maintaining proper wheel alignment and handling.
Function of a Track Control Arm:
- Wheel Alignment: Helps maintain proper wheel position relative to the body of the car.
- Smooth Ride: Absorbs shocks from bumps and potholes via bushings and ball joints.
- Handling Stability: Ensures the wheels follow a predictable path for safe steering and braking.
- Connection Point: Links suspension components to the vehicle’s frame.
Construction:
A typical control arm consists of:
- Steel or aluminum arm: Durable and often shaped like an “A” or “L”.
- Bushings: Rubber or polyurethane inserts that absorb vibrations.
- Ball joint: A spherical bearing that allows for multi-directional movement and connects to the steering knuckle.
Types of Control Arms:
- Upper Control Arm: Used in double-wishbone suspension setups (less common in modern vehicles).
- Lower Control Arm (Track Control Arm): Most commonly referred to as “chimta” and more widely used in modern independent suspension systems.
- Single or Double Wishbone: Depending on the suspension design, there may be one or two arms per wheel.
Symptoms of a Bad Track Control Arm:
- Clunking noises from the suspension.
- Uneven tire wear.
- Poor alignment or drifting.
- Vibration in the steering wheel.
- Loose or wandering steering.
Maintenance and Replacement:
- Inspection: Regular checks during wheel alignment or suspension service.
- Lifespan: Typically lasts between 80,000 – 160,000 km, depending on driving conditions.
- Replacement Cost: Varies by make/model, generally ranges from $100 to $400 per arm (parts + labor).
Common Vehicles Using Track Control Arms:
- Sedans (e.g., Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla)
- SUVs (e.g., Toyota Fortuner, Ford Explorer)
- Pickup trucks (e.g., Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger)
